‘Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory; tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat’ – Sun Tzu

This paper, from Russ Huxtable, ISARR’s Head of Advisory and Strategy Lead, looks at resilience as a broader construct and demonstrates why it needs to be at the heart of corporate strategy if it is truly to be of significant value.

For many years businesses and organisations have run what appear to be successful Business Continuity Departments operating a management system in line with ISO 22301. Moreover, significant resources are invested in these tactical level organisations in a belief that they act as an insurance against disruptive events.

However, many are left to their own devices to create a myriad of Business Impact Analysis and Business Continuity Plans in liaison with other departments as senior leaders are too focused on the normal day to day business whilst accepting there is a need for some level of contingency planning that can be left to the Business Continuity Manager. In other words, most organisations have tactics but no strategy, which as Sun Tzu points out, is not a great position to be in.
